As part of our Attack your Budget Series, this article will help you save money on your water bill. Read all our earlier archived articles to see how to save money on each line item of your PBandJAHM spending plan (aka budget)…. Many of our articles in this series will show you how to choose a level of savings that is right for you… choose to be a crawler, walker, or runner and run all the way to the bank!

Unless you are in a unique situation where you may have the opportunity to shop for different water companies you are probably like most of us and are stuck with the county water system. Even if you have a well for water and a septic system for sewage, you will most likely have to pay some bills somewhere down the road for water testing and septic services.

Much like the power utilities, conservation seems to be the biggest way to save money on these regular bills.

Start by contacting your local water company for a booklet on conservation OR visit their website. It will be full of tips, like don’t leave the water on while brushing your teeth, or installing a more water efficient shower head in order to conserve water. You can also place a clean brick or stone in your toilette tank to reduce the amount of water necessary to fill the tank. Don’t let your toddlers see you putting the brick in the tank. You are already trying to keep the trucks, dinosaurs, and mermaid dolls out of the bowl.. you don’t need them in the tank too. 

Crawler: Drain a gallon of water through the valve at the bottom of your water heater once a year. Draining removes the sediment that collects in the bottom of your tank. This sediment could eventually cause leaks to develop.
Walker: Turn your water heater off while away on vacation.
Runner: Install low-flow shower heads. You can reduce your water use by 50% . And you probably won’t even notice the difference.
