1) Return those unwanted Christmas gifts.
The stores can tell by the product UPC code if it was in their inventory, so you don’t necessarily need a receipt for stores like Target and WalMart. However, ToyRUs will not take returns without a receipt. Use the returned cash to put on your credit cards. If you can only get an in-store card, use it for necessities, like food and clothing.

2) E-Bay your smaller valuables or un-returnable gifts.
Pick up some FREE flat rate boxes and envelopes at your post office and you can ship anything you can fit in the box or envelope for one flat rate. The flat rate is zip code driven, but the envelope is about $4.75 and the small box is about $10.00 and the large box is about $13.50. This will keep your shipping under control and predictable when listing. Items that are worth the trouble are new electronics, video games, and middle priced jewelry. See what will fit in the box, and then list all the items as one LOT.

3) Craig’s List anything that won’t fit into a flat rate box.

It is FREE to list and you don’t have to ship. Buyers come to you to pick up the items. Just don’t give out an e-mail or phone number that you are uncomfortable with giving out to strangers. Never give out your address before you have a working phone number for your buyer.
Items that are worth the trouble: Exercise equipment, large electronics (like TVs), furniture, and large plastic outdoor play equipment.

4) Clean out your Closets and cabinets.
Go through Kid’s toy storage areas and set aside items for a yard sale or to E-bay, Craig’s list, or get it ready for consignment. The consignment season starts February. If you are in middle TN, check out www.consigningtime.com

5) Clean out your garage!
If you can’t park your car in that baby, it’s long overdue for a clean sweep! Most of your items in here are going to do great on Craig’s List. Just get your spouses permission before selling the car or tools. 

After you have paid off that Holiday debt, don’t forget to spread the JOY and give some things to those who have less. This month’s spread the joy charity is Good Will. www.GoodWill.org
